How to Paint Furniture Without Sanding | Chalk Based Paint Application
Don't you just hate the mess sanding can make? Wouldn't you love to be able to apply your paint and achieve that same beautifully smooth finish without sanding? In this brand new tutorial, we'll show you our tips and tricks on how to apply Country Chic Paint to get the clean, smooth finish you love!
Step 1) Prepare your surface
Before you dive in and start painting, make sure you read our suggestions in our surface prep tutorial at http://www.countrychicpaint.com/blog/how-to-prep-your-piece/. A properly prepared surface will ensure your beautiful work will last for years to come.
Step 2) Shake, stir, and pour your paint
Before you start painting and before you open up the can, you'll want to make sure that you shake the can really well to mix all the contents together. The contents of the paint will separate over time so it's very important that you make sure everything is well mixed together before you start painting. Shake it well for approximately one minute, then open the can and stir it for another two-minutes just to make sure that it's all blended well together.
Step 3) How to hold your paint brush
To get the most out of each brush stroke, hold your brush right on the ferrule which is the steel part. Think of holding it similarly to a pencil. Place your thumb on one side of the ferrule and your other fingers on the opposite side. This will give you more control of your brush.
Step 4) Apply your first coat
Begin by dipping your brush into the paint, covering the bristles about halfway. Make sure you have a decent amount of paint on your brush without making it so full that it's going to drip right off. To get the smoothest finish possible, make sure that your paint strokes all go in one direction. Don't apply your paint crosswise or you might end up with a lot of texture in your finish. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you don't want to paint over sections that have started to dry already. If you see you've missed a spot you can just go back later and add a second coat. Don't try to fix it after it's partially dry.
Step 5) Add a second coat if desired
Our paint will often give great coverage with just one coat, but if you feel your piece will need a second coat, make sure that your first coat has fully dried before you start applying more coats. In most cases, the first coat will be fully dry after about 30 minutes, however keep in mind that the climate you're working in has a big influence on how quickly your paint will dry. If it is very warm outside your paint will dry more quickly, but if the humidity is high the paint might take a long time to dry. Always avoid painting in direct sunlight or when the humidity is higher than 80 percent. In average circumstances it takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes for your paint coat to dry, but before putting on a second coat you want to wait at least 30 to 60 minutes. Again if it's very cold, humid, or if you put on a very thick paint coat you'll need to wait a little longer.
