Chalk paint is trending these days. The chalk finish gives furniture or anything that fresh matte finish. But there are a few things you need to know before you start painting with chalk paint.

With all projects I recommend gathering everything you need to before you begin. Here is a list of supplies you will need to paint a furniture with chalk paint.

  • chalk paint (I used Dixie Belle)
  • painters tape
  • cup of water
  • synthetic paint brush
  • wax (I used Dixie Belle)
  • wax brush
  • drop cloth or paper for protection
  • cleaner
  • paper towels

First thing put painters tape anywhere you don't want paint getting too.

Then mix up some Dixie Belle white lightning cleaner in a spray bottle and clean all the surface you are planning to paint.

Make sure to use a clean wet wash cloth to rinse off the white lightening. Do this several times until you feel the cleaner is all gone.

Now it is time to start painting with the chalk paint. Make sure your paint brush is damp not dripping but wet. Then get a little chalk paint on the tip of the brush and start painting.

I recommend using long continuous strokes starting from one side of the cabinet to the other.

Here is an example of painting up against the painters tape.

Once you have the first coat let it dry for about 30 minutes and then it is time for a second coat.

Now repeat the first painting step and apply the second coat. This coat will be more pure and most likely be your last coat.

However, if you are using white like I am then you will probably need three coats. If you need to do a third coat let the second coat dry overnight before adding the third coat.

Don't forget to dampen your brush while you are working. It will help the chalk paint glide onto the surface and give a more level look.

Let your freshly painted furniture dry overnight and the next day it is time to add the wax.

Take your brush and swirl it around the wax getting plenty of wax on the end of the brush.

Next apply the wax in up and down or circular motions. I worked from left the right to make sure I covered all the chalk painted areas.

Once you have applied all the wax take a clean low lent free cloth and buff the wax.

See how easy it is to chalk paint.

Chalk painting is simple and if you are a lover of the farmhouse look then this is the paint for you.

Look how amazing this project turned out.

Now add your accessories and you are finished.

The wax helps protect the chalky finish so finger prints and such will not show up.

And you can chalk paint just about anything. I have , painted signs and much more.

I hope this post on how to chalk paint has helped and inspired you to do your own project.
