Applying chalk paint to new piece of unfinished furniture

Do you have to prime a new piece of unfinished furniture before using chalk paint on it? Have not yet tried chalk paint and am a fan of how this is applied. Thanks for all the help!

Hi. No, the chalk paint's use if so great because you don't have to prime or sand beforehand!

If you are using Annie Sloane or CC Caldwell, no, you do not have to sand or prime. Just paint away!

No, just make sure the piece is clean and then you are good to go! Good luck!

You don't have to prime, HOWEVER, if the piece has wood grain that you don't want to see through the paint, I recommend priming it with Kilz. Otherwise, you may end up applying the chalk paint multiple times at a cost greater than primer, and the grain may still show through after numerous coats. And if the grain has a "texture" to it that you also don't want to see, regardless of color, sanding might help that too.
