Applying chalk paint to new piece of unfinished furniture

Polly Royster on Mar 26, 2015You don't have to prime, HOWEVER, if the piece has wood grain that you don't want to see through the paint, I recommend priming it with Kilz. Otherwise, you may end up applying the chalk paint multiple times at a cost greater than primer, and the grain may still show through after numerous coats. And if the grain has a "texture" to it that you also don't want to see, regardless of color, sanding might help that too.Helpful Reply
