Can i reupholster over faux leather?

I have been conned by my daughter to reupholster this old faux leather club chair. Can I add the new velvet fabric over the faux leather or must I remove it first?

You would have to carefully remove the fabric and use it as a pattern.
You could make a chair cover that could easily be slipped over the chair.

I would think it would be difficult to upholster over the faux leather since it is 'slippery'. I would remove it first.
I don’t think faux leather will have the grip needed to reupholster it well.
To re-upholster it correctly, you would want to remove the faux leather. If you don't want to do that, you would have to make a slipcover to be able to fit on top of it. OR you could buy a club chair slipcover. If you are unsure how to remove the fabric and use it as a pattern, check out my post:

I have always had a pro redo my furniture, except things like dining room chairs.
Hi! You might be able to cover it, but, for a better look and longer use I would remove the old cover a section at a time. Good luck and stay safe!
Hello, I would think that a layer of batting might be a suggestion between the new slipcover layer and existing.
Because the faux leather is slippery you should add a layer of batting using a spray-mount style glue before laying the new upholstery on top. The advantage of removing the faux leather first is it will give you a template from which to cut the new upholstery fabric.
Amy is right, I would remove the faux leather and use as a template, I have done this type of project and it turned out beautifully, without having to add batting.
Agree with Amy. Don’t do it. Eventually all materials will slide and move distorting your new work. Due to movement when sitting in chair. Also layers may not fit properly into corners etc. I tried it. Failure. Batting will slide. Gluing down will cause a huge mess
Just go right over it
You really need to remove the leather first. I would add a layer of batting next, stapling in place, stapling below seat level. Next I wold cover the batting with a layer of muslin made just like a slip cover but stapled in place very tight. Next you can make the slip cover out of whatever you want. This chair is ready for slip cover change whenever you want.
I think painting will be easier
Hi! I’m curious how this project came out and what you ended up doing? I have about the same chair to reupholster since our kittens scratched up our faux leather on them. 🤦🏻♀️
