Since your table is wood and if it has paint on it you could strip it with a non-toxic product called Citri strip, from there you could sand and stain or paint. Minwax makes a good stain.

If you want to chalk paint your table, Annie Sloan makes a good product, you'll need to apply a sealant or wax to protect it when done, Chalk paint will otherwise scuff off easily if not sealed.

Behr & Sherwin-Williams are 2 good paints.

If there is paint on the table, you can figure out if it is oil based or water based by taking a Q-tip or a cotton ball and dipping it in acetone-in an inconspicuous area of the table. If the paint comes off with the acetone, it is oil based, if not, then it is latex based. Most indoor furniture that is painted is water based. Then sand lightly so the new paint has something to adhere to.

You will definitely need a saw to shorten the legs. Even a hand saw would work but will take longer. If the piece is smooth to your liking, you can apply a stain-blocking primer such as Zinsser and then paint in any color you like. I'd suggest using either a satin or glossy finish. The home improvement sales people will be able to advisse you. Sounds like a fun project!

Perhaps a friend, neighbor, coworker or relative might have equipment to help you with the sawing. For re-staining might consider using polyacrylic. For painting a good cleaning and primer might be recommended before paint application.

A lot of people do recommend Dixie Belle chalk paint.

Hi Gina, first, it depends on the look you want, do you want chunky wood, or country chic? If you want wood, you can sand and stain OR oil the wood. If you want country chic, I think chalk paint is your answer! You only need to clean and sand little rough spots you may find

You need a saw to cut the legs. Have someone cut them for you if you do not have a power saw.

If you don't get the legs perfectly even the table could wobble. Would be best to have someone with a power saw to cut these off.

You can purchase replacement legs at a hardware or big box store.

As for refinishing, I would clean with TSP if you are going to paint. Then prime and paint with a good paint and then seal with a water based poly so that it doesn't yellow.

If you are going to stain, then sand it smooth. If it is light enough to stain, clean with denatured alcohol and add stain. Then add a protector as well but you can use regular polyurethane.

Note that you should scuff between coats of poly. I use fine steel wool.

If the legs screw off you can buy Bun feet at Lowes or Home Depot. I like to use either Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams Satin on furniture. No need to seal and satin makes it easier to clean.

Thanks for the suggestion but it’s a counter height table which I want to lower to a regular height but I will take the paint and stain suggestions

A good cleaning and a light sanding will be ok if you want to paint it...

You can maybe get some replacement legs or rent a saw from the hardware store. Maybe a friend has a laser level — set the table upside down on a level surface and use the laser to line up the cut lines. A sanding primer would help you skip the sanding step if you wanted to paint it.
