Glass on a table

Deborah C
by Deborah C
I need a glass on this wrought iron table and thought I had some company that would come by and give me a quote but once again, this company in Atlanta was undependable. I live in Austell, Georgia, and I guess they did want to travel that far from Norcross. Here is the table.

Deborah, that seems like a fairly straightforward project. You could probably just turn the table over and trace a template of the top onto a piece of paper or cardboard and take that with you to a glass shop. If you don't know one locally you could start by asking any of your neighbors if they have recently had windows redone. The same place would probably cut glass for you (at least that is the case where I live). If not, if you find a contractor for your fireplace job, I'm sure he or she would know the local glass shop.

How easy was that. I could do that. Wish someone gave me that advice before the holidays. This project would be done before the holidays. Thank you.

I picked up a heavy glass top for a coffee table I built some years ago. I found an ad in the back of Fine woodworking magazine. I had called a number of glass shops locally and found that this place in Mich. was a bit cheaper overall ( even with shipping) than any place local. This was for a 30 x 40 piece with rounded edge (polished) and 1/2 thick. If I remember it was in the 70 to 80 dollar range back then.
  • The template is exactly the way to do this. The cost involved in them coming out is just not worth their time or effort. Be sure however to tell them you want tempered safety glass and that they polish the edges for safety. It will cost a bit more, but its worth it. Also be sure to tell them that your using it for a table top. Once you get it home. Purchase some small felt dots and place them on the metal frame, not the glass to help protect against scratches on the glass.
  • Another option may be to find a glass top at a thrift store or in the damaged section that may be the right size. You dont care about what it sits on at the store. It may be cheaper.

If you didn't find any place to take your template you can go here: A Modern Glass & Mirror Coā€Ž 305 Boulevard Southeast Atlanta, GA 30312-3304 I have had several glass projects solved at this place. They were very helpful every time I have ever gone there. Good luck!!!

Any glass shop should be able to help you. If there's a shop in your (town) area that repairs windshields even, they can order glass for your table & cut it to size.

I never knew that Meri. I can call a repair shop that replace windows. I will try today. Really is a beautiful table. It was left behind in my neighbor's home when the bank foreclosed on her home. I had to clean it up and spray painted it and it really turned out nice. Thanks again for the tips and Paul thank you for the company's name. I will surely get this done. Thought it would be an easy project for me when I got the table, but it has turned out to be a nightmare.

Yes, I went to my local Automobile Glass Repair shop with my homemade template and they cut the glass for me. I was ready in 2 days.
