Painting an old handmade side table

I was thinking about painting this handmade side table, to protect it. Do I use ordinary primer paint as first coat? Have some Zinnser 1 2 3 leftover from other job finished. Don't think I have any photos.

Generic answer. If I am using regular paint latex, I sand fill holes and paint. Then I seal it with a water base polyurethane. But if you post a picture of the table my answer might be different. It depends on how old, is it wood or something else? Will there be bleed through....ect

Sherrie: It quite roughed out as is. I was thinking Zinnser 1 2 3 as primer. Not sure where it came from. Once I fix it up will probably sell it. Need to downsize.

I've painted a lot of furniture and here's what I would advise. First, make sure the table is clean of dust and grime. You can then lightly sand and wipe away sanding dust or do like I do--avoid sanding by wiping the table down with a "liquid sandpaper" (also known as "deglosser") product. Using a brush or roller, give the table 1 or 2 light coats of a good bonding primer, allowing adequate drying time between coats and before your first coat of paint. The Zinsser 1-2-3 is fine to use for your priming step. I've used it, like it, and had good results with it. Then apply several light coats of a good interior latex paint with a brush or roller. Applying a protective top coat is optional. A few random tips... I do not recommend the all-in-one primer and paint combos. They might be okay for walls but I have not been happy using them on furniture pieces. Buy the best quality paint you can afford. It really does make a difference on furniture. Multiple light coats of primer and paint dry faster and harder than 1 or 2 heavy coats. If you want a nice, smooth and even finish, do not try to use paint from an aerosol can (or spray-on protective top coats). There is a time and place for spray-on products but furniture isn't it. It just doesn't give a professional finish for furniture. Depending on weather conditions, latex paint can take several weeks to fully cure. Until it has cured, anything you place on the table top can stick (and pull off your paint) so give it ample curing time (even after it is dry to the touch) before you put anything in or on it. Most important--just take your time.

Shari: Do I clean with TSP? Then rinse off let dry and the primer paint. I think the paint might keep it together. No not how old it is, left at last house.

@Nancy Jenkins If you have TSP on hand, yes, you can use that. I typically just use whatever I already have in the kitchen for cleaning like Fantastic, 409 or Greased Lightening etc. You don't have to heavily clean it because if you use a deglosser/liquid sandpaper product in place of sanding, that will remove some of the grime when you wipe it on. If you sand, that also will remove grunge that accumulated through the years.

Shari: Just need to find some used packing paper pieces for painting part and for TSP part maybe just use the tub.

I was wondering about finding some nice stencils and decorate the small side table. Certainly is more solid after primer paint.
