Looks beautiful to me as is. Is that red mahogany? Maybe if you papered the back, this would give you a new look.

Hi Shelle- agree with Marion- since so much of this piece is the glass doors, you could try adding a very bright and pretty wallpaper or stenciled pattern to the back wall of it. Then update the hardware with some paint to brighten that. If you really want to paint the entire piece, then you can just choose a color that complements the room- its going to be a statement piece! Annie Sloan Old White or Duck Egg Blue are especially lovely on this type of a piece when distressed. Good luck- would love to see the after pics!

There are lots of great calk paints out red, or navy and then add a antique glaze to tone it down, would be fun!

I had a cabinet that I just painted the drawers and bottom doors which kept most of the mahogany wood intact. It looked fine in person, but when I took a picture, it looked like it needed the top doors painted as well. Either way, the frame, sides, and top were still wood. It made a huge difference in getting rid of the heavy feeling.

I'd try papering the back with an embossed wallpaper. I think that would draw more attention to your collectables. Embossed paper can be dry brushed to bring out the pattern. Too much pattern would take away from your items on display so keep it light. If you don't like that then paint the window frames. If that doesn't please you then keep going until it does. My daughter liked the color of pink post-it-notes but I thought they would be a little too much pink. So we stuck the post-its on the drawer fronts and both of us were happy to see the finished look before we re-finished it.

I really don't know what color scheme or style you're after, but if you google "primitive red buffet" you'll see the most beautiful red buffets. Or you can just google painted buffets and you'll get some ideas from there. I'd love to see what color you paint it. Have fun!

This is a lovely piece, colour depends what your taste are and also the other furniture you own. I love warm greys or greigy colours as the go with so many other colours, but would concur with Lincurt and paper the inside back with wallpaper. You have plenty of suggestions to ponder over, good luck with your project.

Do you have a recurring color scheme in your home? Maybe one of those, or you can do a pop of color and wallpaper the back, as other readers have suggested. Look at other pieces on Pinterest that people have done to find something that catches your eye. Happy painting!
