It may be possible to dye a light color darker, but to go dark to light you would have to bleach out the color, if it is possible to do without harming the fabric or changing the texture. You could possible do it with paint.
Nancy's right, you'll have to remove color before dyeing. I suggest a slipcover. If you really don't care about the sofa, give the paint a try. Then get a slipcover :-) . . . and if you want to try bleaching, try it on an inconspicuous part first - it'll depend on the material and the existing dyes in it whether or not it'll work. I'd start with something less aggressive, like maybe hydrogen peroxide, then maybe a strong oxi-clean solution, then move up to real bleach, but other than the hydrogen peroxide which becomes inert pretty quickly, you'll need to rinse it out pretty thoroughly so you don't bleach your clothes when you sit on it.
Rit Color Remover will remove or reduce the color from most fabrics. This will bring the fabric to an off-white or cream color. Then the fabric can be re-dyed a new color.
