Use chalk paint - it will adhere to almost any surface.
Buy a primer at a good paint store that is meant for this type of “wood”. Once it has the right primer you can easily paint.
The trouble with painting it with latex, the water in it can warp the wood. I painted mine with a textured paint in dark gray and it worked well.
I used spray paint with primer 2x in it for my basement pressed wood and boy it looks new and updated and add new hardware 📌
