“Matching” furniture is a thing of the past. In decades gone by, the traditional thing to do was to purchase a furniture suite of matching pieces. For example, buying a bed, two matching side tables and a matching dresser – all in the same color and finish, all with the same look.
While darker shades will give a room a cosy vibe, more saturated hues create energy and life in a space. Colors like cherry red, ochre yellow, lime green or rusty orange will bring out those warm hues in oak for a zesty palette that warms up a space.
Remove the hardware, clean with TSP, and you can paint in a color that compliments the dark furniture. If you want to stain to match, "sand" with fine steel wool, wipe down with denatured alcohol, and then you can stain and finish. If it were me, I would go with navy.
Painting it is fairly easy. You need to decide on color or pattern to use. I would give all surfaces a light sanding prior to applying paint
Hi Tania, Why not take a small drawer of your new walnut furniture to the home improvement store and check out some completely different color paint samples (or bring several paint samples home to ry). You might decide a completely different color to add some pizzazz to complement your new furniture rather than trying to match. I painted one piece of my furniture in my favorite color--fuchsia--and have had many compliments on it. Maybe navy as already suggested or a deep rich green?
I like the natural wood look that it has now.
paint it a soft pink but I wouldn't do anything until I got the new furniture in the room
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and inspiring ideas .I guess I will have time to decide until I get the new furniture .I hope I will show you my outcome in the near future. Thanks once again
I love the look of mix and match furniture and the piece has good lines. I would keep it and add furniture transfer to it in colors that tie it into the rest of the room. No painting needed, just rub them on and seal over them if you like. I just used some you can peek here: https://www.exquisitelyunremarkable.com/2022/01/repurposed-cabinet-door.html
Very interesting indeed .Thank you Kim .
An option to refinishing the entire dresser is to refinish only the fronts of the drawers a darker color. It would be a lot less work, but may be enough of a change to match well with the other furniture in the room.
Here are a couple of examples:
Yes ,very nice as well and least chances of things turning out bad. Cause until you start you get a lot of them thoughts of the outcome turning out wrong . Thank you so much .
I would for sure start with chalk paint and then check all those inspirations here https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=stencil%20over%20furniture%20diy&rs=typed&term_meta[]=stencil%7Ctyped&term_meta[]=over%7Ctyped&term_meta[]=furniture%7Ctyped&term_meta[]=diy%7Ctyped
It’ll be quite difficult to match it to something else in the room, it’ll always be just slightly different enough so you might consider matching the headboard or paint it another shade that’s in the room then use the pink as an accent.
Mix colour with another until you achieve the desired colour mix.
