How can this desk top be fixed?

I bought this desk a while back and had a young kid sand it for me. I was dealing with some health issues and the piece got put on hold but now that I am ready to paint it I notice that after sanding the surface has these sections that are almost cardboard like. No amount of paint is going to fix this problem. Any suggestions other than having a new top made? I am wondering if I keep sanding if I will get down to the wood again as it seems these sections were decoratively built up.

Do you know if the desk is solid wood, laminate, or partial board with veneer?

Please post a picture of it so that we can see what you have to work with.

It is hard to tell what you have going on with your desk without a picture, maybe layers of different veneers? Just a guess. A filler like Bondo Wood Filler is an option to build up a layer and eventually paint.

  • It sounds like it may be laminate. I would cover the surface with Bondo, sand it smooth and then paint it.

It sounds like the top had a veneer on it. If that is the case, you will have to have a new top made for it.

I agree with the folks above. There was a Vaneer of some kind on it and it’s been sanded right through. And easy thing to do - they are thin. You will likely need a new top.

YEah seems like he exposed the particle board. Not savable.

Most likely it is pressed wood or a veneer. I think your best bet is to stop sanding and either try to use wood filler or add a new layer of veneer.

    Hello Marian,

Sounds as though you have a paper veneer on this piece. Might come off with water and a paint scraper. Good luck!

  • Is it particle board? If you could show us a detail picture, that would help.

I would go to hardware store and ask about a self leveling compound, typically used on floors, but will work for a flat table too, especially if you are going to pain it after...
