My favorite way is to use Fusion mineral paint. Very little
prep work! Just scuff the piece with sandpaper, clean and paint. The colors are gorgeous too!
Remove hardware, wipe down with TSP, prime with a sealing primer to prevent bleed through, then paint with a good paint (2 coats). I have used furniture paint and regular house paint. I don't use chalk paint because it scratches easily.

Remove the hardware and clean it very well. sand to give the paint a surface to adhere to. Paint with whichever paint you like, at least 2 coats, allow to dry between coats.
If you use milk paint, it will give you a matte finish which people distress with sand paper to give their project a rustic look, also with milk paint you do not have to sand initially. Then be sure to apply wax or a finish over it because it will scratch off.
