Hi Linda. Remove all hardware and drawers. You would start by sanding it to get the old finish off. I start with a lower grit which is tougher and then go over it again with a higher grit. After it has all been sanded wipe it down good to remove any sanding dust. Then apply your stain. Apply has many coats as needed to achieve the color you want making sure it dries between coats. After that has dried then I apply 3 coats of polyurethane. When you apply this you need to make sure it is dry and lightly sand in between coats, and wiping down the piece to remove any dust. This helps eliminate any tiny bubbles and help the next coat adhere. Once it is all dry then put your hardware back one and enjoy!

  • Try using a product from Homer Formby called Furniture Refinisher. I've used it before and was very happy with the results.

Clean with TSP. If it is in good shape then just prime and paint.

If you want to keep the wood look you can use a stripper to remove the old finish and stain and then sand it down before restaining and protective finish.
