Sand or strip them first, you might get away with using a product like Liquid Sandpaper, but existing furniture oils will mess up a paint job and must be removed
Is it white oak, golden oak, red oak? Do you want to totally cover it, or are you talking about the "restoration hardware, weathered oak" type finish?
I have done this on multiple pieces... I make tables/bar stools, etc and don't always have the luxury of using expensive wood!
There are lots of recipes on Pinterest. Play around on the underside until you achieve a look you like. I always buy the little samples of paint and have them mix sample colors- dilute with a lot of water. It goes FAR. If the tones on your Furniture are yellow/gold, use a grey with blue tones- (if you are trying to knock out the yellow) think of a color wheel. Whatever you are trying to knock out, use the opposite in your mix. If you want warm tones, use a neutral grey. (The tones will be warm because the yellow/gold is already there) start by using about 1 part paint to five parts water... dip a sponge or rag in and literally "wash" the wood. If it's not the right coverage, add more paint and try again. Keep going until you like it.
If you have more questions, let me know... but Pinterest is absolutely a place where you will find TONS of instruction!
You have to sand them first, then paint the color you like. Finally, seal with polyurethane.
