If there are few to no chips, you can skip sanding altogether ny using a chalk paint or a fusion paint. They only require that the piece be well cleaned/degreaser prior to painting. the chalk paint finish will require a sealant, either wax or polycrylic. Neither paint HAS to be distressed if that is not the look you are going for
I would definitely use chalk paint. It’s best to get the recommended brush tho. Seal for sure as recommended above, either option.
