I have a small old dark wood bench to update

We downsized recently. Our decor is Paris flat on the water. I have a small d dark bench I want to lighten and recover. I would like to change the wood to either a driftwood color/feel OR to a light color with some gold streaks. Either would work well I think.

That's a sweet bench - I think you could chalk paint it right over the finish (well a little sanding first). Then scuff it up a bit and voila! By having the dark original come through, I think it would be more complementary to the dark furniture.

I would leave it dark. . .and upholster with a burlap coffee bean sack. . .most coffee shops sell them. . .a great! easy, wood freshener is, Howard's Restor-A-Finish. . .gives sheen while brightening the color of the wood finish. . .good luck!

How about soft antique gold like a liquid leaf and velvet leopard print upholstery!

All three suggestions are helpful and have me looking at my challenge differently. Thanks so much for your help!

I am going to recover with coffee bean sack and first try the wood freshener and if I am still not happy will try gold leave paint with coffee bean sack cover. I like the addition of another more casual item in the rooms and that bench can float around the apartment. ThNk you!

A salt wash would look really nice on that bench and also give it some texture. The two tone technique would allow you to match it up to the fabric you choose.

Pale grey, with gold accents would look good.
