First sand down the old finish to bare wood with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. Another choice is to get a good paint stripper and brush on in manageable sizes and scrape off old paint on the entire piece. Once you are totally down to bare wood, with no paint anywhere on wood, sand again (I use a power sander that uses approximately 4" sheets) anyway, sand again with 100 grit all over, and finish with 220 grit sandpaper. Buy a tack cloth at hardware store and remove all sand dust completely! Every last bit of dust must be totally gone before you apply stain! For staining and sealing in one step (I do) use a gel stain in the color choice you want. I rub the stain on with an old cotton cloth ( like an old T-shirt) and you decide if one coat is enough for depth of stain color. If not, then rub on gel stain a second time. Let it dry completely and then stand back and admire your beautiful restored piece!
