You can paint furniture with either oil or latex paint. Latex is fine but it is thick and as we all remember it can make opening drawers and doors difficult. Oil based paints sprayed on give you a thinner more water resistant finish. Either paint needs to be sealed to protect the finish. Remember that the more prep you do the better the final result. Lastly allow the paint to fully cure before putting it into service. If there is a question as to how long to allow it to cure error on the side of caution and allow more time.

I swear by Fusion Mineral Paint and Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint (both Manufactured by the same company and really easy to use)
Chalk Paint works the best for furniture. It is a type of paint and comes in different brands. Just remember it is not chalk board paint for wall.
Rub down. Prime and undercoat, then when dry Top coat with Eggshell or Satin finish.
