How to refinish a beat up laminate top desk?

I received an answer on facebook to remove the laminate by scraping it off, then sand and paint with chalk paint. What do you think?

No need to remove the laminate. You don't know what is underneath. Any knicks and dents can be filled in with a wood filler or auto body filler. Lightly sand the the top to remove any shine. Prime with KILZ, BIN. or Zinsser primer, then paint with an acrylic paint.

I agree with William. I recently did this using Zinsser primer followed by 2 coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint in Graphite. I wanted a durable top and a dark color, so I used a glaze with black latex paint followed by 4 coats of Polyacrylic. (The base was ASCP in French Linen with 2 coats of Polyacrylic.) My son has the piece in his family room for use with his young children.

William is right, no need to remove laminate. Follow William's instructions and it will be beautiful. Just remember to let each coat dry well before moving on to the next coat, a lot of people get impatient and end up with a tacky mess.

Hi Elaine! My only addition to the answers above would be to make sure the laminate is affixed securely to the wood below. If not, you will need to glue and clamp it back down. If you use chalk paint, you can skip the primer step and just paint, then add a wax or poly finish. (I use poly for most desk or dresser tops- I feel like it is more durable than wax)

I agree, no need to remove the laminate, sand and use primer, maybe even two light coats, before the final color is painted. Chalk paint may not require the primer coat.
