How can I makeover my bunk bed?

I have an old black metal bunk bed. The top bunk is twin size and the bottom is double bed side that fold into a futon. I would like to change it and get rid of the top bunk. Any ideas?

How is the top bunk attached to the bottom one? Is there a reason you can't just remove it?
I think I used to have this bunk bed as a kid! If it's what I think it is, it will be hard to get rid of the top bunk because it provides stability for the whole structure.
Can you post pictures? Maybe all of us together we can work out a plan to remove the top
