Yes, you can paint them. You will just need to be careful if you are removing the doors because that can cause deterioration where the screws are in the material.
You can paint them if they haven't started to flake and swell. if they have painting won't help.

Hi Pam! I can tell you how to paint your melamine kitchen cabinets with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint :)
It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle.
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step three: Use Gator Hide for a water-repellent finish
No sanding required!
