If painting on finished wood, can I use a primer or do you have to sand the piece?

Lightly sand to remove any shine. Prime with Kilz, Bin, or Zinsser primer, then paint.

Steps listed above are most often recommended, but IMHO, GRIPPER Primer by Glidden is the best primer. It will even stick to glass and comes in 2 shades... White for light topcoats and Grey for dark topcoats.

I would sand it first it helps the paint to adhere to your furniture if you use chalk paint no need for this.

Go to Lowes or other paint store and buy the Rustoleum Cabinet refinishing kit. It works so well and in easier than all the sanding. It offers many finishes and the directions are easy. The kit supplies everything you need.

Not sure what kind of furniture piece you are trying to redo - if you want to add a metallic trim, you can buy gold or silver leaf and brush it on the finished wood.
