Does the finish need to be stripped or sanded before it can be painted?

    That depends on what paint you are using.

    I think we will use an adhering primer, then paint and then a poly coat over that.

      I would still first clean it using a steel wool type pad to deep clean and help rough it up a bit.

    Lightly sand to remove any shine and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with KILZ, BIN, or Zinsser primer. Then paint with your color. Use a foam roller to get a smooth finish and a brush for any details.

    I've never done it. But I read if you use chalk paint, you don't have to prep first. Might Google that to find out more info.
