Repairing and painting a waterfall dresser- help!!

My mother had an older waterfall dresser. It is the perfect fit for my bathroom. There are small flaws on much of the finish but a middle drawer has peeling issues across the middle of the entire drawer front from pull to pull. I'm not sure sanding will be enough to make it paintable. Is there a way to disguise the flaws? Filler? Stencil? Chalk paint? Help. I need this dresser as it is just fit for my bathroom.

Chalk paint works really well over flaws!
Caulk and wood fillers have helped fill in and cover flaws and they all seem to be paintable and stainable.
