Yes, a light sanding with 120-180 grit paper to rough the surface for the paint to adhere to. Just make sure you wipe down the dust before you paint.
Most definitely sand it lightly though just to roughy if up some. Clean it good afterwards prime and paint.
Thanks for the advice :) I will get on that project as soon as rain stops as have to do it outside. One more question, do I need primer if i'm painting them black?
Rather than sanding, I would use liquid sander. Veneer can be very thin and brittle. Liquid sander is just painted on and allows paint to adhere.
Sand lightly, and be sure to repair (ie glue) any loose veneer, or it will get worse after it's painted.
