Spray painting a small dresser inside house with light carpet.

I want to spray paint a small dress drawer with black paint I have light carpet. How would I do this without accidentally spraying other places than the walls and carpet?

Old newspapers spread around the floor, tucked under the item and taped (low-tack tape) up the wall, although I would probably put down plastic sheeting first so that the newsprint would not transfer onto the carpet. When you're finished, throw the papers away, and you've saved your plastic sheeting for another project!

I would not suggest spray painting inside your home. Take this to the garage with ventilation.

It's not a good idea to spray paint in the house the smell is terrible but if you have to open all the windows. Put your small item in a large box make a painting booth if you can it should help with spatter. You can line it with plastic if you would like.

I have worked in a paint department and I do know that spraying paint inside, is not a good idea. It forms a cloud of paint and it gets EVERYWHERE. Take it outside or to the garage. It smells bad too, ick.

DON'T! You stand a chance of (1) inhaling that paint...not good or (2) ruining the entire room...not good! Take it to a friend's house and ask if you can use their garage or yard. You will still need to put down a protective piece of plastic to keep from paint getting on anything. Make sure there is nothing valuable or vulnerable in the garage nor annything sitting close even if outside!

I agree with the other respondents about not spray painting indoors. If you don't have access to an area that you can paint outdoors, then I would suggest you consider using brush painting the dresser with chalk paint. I have used it indoors and it dries quickly. Typically it will take 2 coats. The paint has a very chalky finish, but once it is sealed with a wax (or poly) it will have a lovely finish. I use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but there are other brands available, or you could make your own.

Chalk paint is a good alternative - besides all the inhaling problems with spray paint, it takes some practice to do a good job. Unless you have access to a garage or covered outside area that is warm enough, I would use a brush (I do this all the time on my kitchen table).

I was assuming you would have good ventilation with open windows, etc., when doing this project. I do agree with the others, however. Spray paint forms a 'cloud' of teeny tiny particles that float around and land on everything and anything and you may not even notice them until some time later when you think, "where did all of these little black specks come from?"

Spray paint is not the best choice for furniture. It does not hold up well on pieces that get a lot of use. Chalk paint is easy to use, covers well, plus you don't have to sand before you use it. If you don't want to spend the money for chalk paint, then enamel is the way to go. You can find enamel in any paint department and they can tint it any color.

I am living proof you DO NOT...DO NOT ...want to spray paint anything inside. We spray painted a frig (outside) it had a couple issues once in the kitchen. I decided to just touch up a couple places. Did I mention the paint is black and we have white floors and counter tops. Let me say the fine particles settled on everything, what a mess, we were finally able to clean it off with hair oil. If you must the area has to be enclosed in lots of plastic.
