Hi there, you want to clean your cabinets REALLY well first and then remove all of your doors (make sure and number them so you know what cabinets they go back to) and all of your drawers.

When we painted my mom's kitchen I put all of her drawers and doors out in her garage. From there I handed sanded everything (including the cabinets not just the drawer and door fronts) and then cleaned everything one more time really well.

Because we wanted them white over a dark wood I opted for Kilz acrylic primer and did three coats. Then we did two coats of a white acrylic paint and then two coats of a semi gloss poly acrylic.

It was VERY time consuming but not a hard job at all. AND it was totally worth it! Three years later and her kitchen still looks lovely!

For best results... take one of the doors into the paint store... ask them what type of paint and primer would work best... and the best type of prep work to do... for the best finish.

Mine are being finished as this is written. The painter cleaned them well with a cleaner, Krudkutter. Then he sanded, primed and finished putting the last coat of Pro-Mat from Sherwin - Williams on them. Many people have used chalk paint from Annie Sloan and General Finishes.

You could paint your cabinets with General Finishes Milk paint. It requires very little prep work. I painted my oak cabinets with the paint more than a year ago, and they look great.
