What is wrong with using the vinyl upholstery paint? Are you looking for a cheap alternative? Remember: you get what you pay for.

Whenever you want to paint something it's best to choose a product made for the material you want to paint. Here are some paints that were reported to work the best on vinyl upholstery:

    • Rust-Oleum Specialty Vinyl (NOT Fabric & Vinyl formula)
    • Krylon Cover Max
    • Kyrlon Color Master with Cover Max Technology
    • Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover

It is absolutely important to clean the vinyl with a de-greaser before painting. 91% isopropyl alcohol works great, but do not use it around an open flame. Although the alcohol won't hurt your skin, be sure to wear gloves so you don't accidentally touch the vinyl.

What kind of bulbs do you have in the room where the couch is? If they are incandescent or flourescent, they may be altering the real colour of the couch. If you changed to LED lights, it may lighten and soften up the colour to one that you think you are happier with.

The couch looks new, the surface is unmarred and smooth. It is a fine neutral colour that will blend in with any colour scheme. It would be quite an expense, and a fair amount of work to try to paint it. If the results do not meet with your expectations, or are less than attractive, then you will be stuck with a mess.

I would dissuade you from painting, and instead encourage you to get some pretty toss cushions and cozy throws in your favourite colours or patterns.

Heritage Traditions Paint ALL IN ONE chalk paint. I am not affiliated in any way with the product, but I do follow their FB page, and it's pretty amazing stuff.

I agree with Lisa Cain, Heirloom Traditions Paint (htpaint.com), but you want the Finish All, not the All-in-One. The Finish All is specially formulated for materials that "give" or stretch, so that no cracking of the paint occurs.

I've painted fabric chairs and vinyl - it does not come out the same way. The paint creates a stiff texture, not soft or smooth to sit on. I would embrace the color with throw pillows and a throw blanket and call it a day!

Never buy a vinyl couch again. I was stuck with one and tried all sorts of paint, but everything peels and deteriorates awfully. Vinyl is plastic and adds to our already huge problem of waste management and plastic contamination. What could be done is to cover it with fabric if you have the skills to upholster it.
