I am attempting to paint bureau and a dresser. What kind of preparing if any needs to be done?? The wood and surfaces are in pretty good shape except for some shallow scratches from moving.

Just make sure it's clean and prime it first

I would just sand it down lightly, wipe with dry cloth and paint. That is how I have always done mine.

Lightly sand. Using a tack cloth or damp rag to wipe off the saw dust, then viola! PAINT!

Be sure to use a high quality primer before painting.

If the wood is stained you have to seal it first or it will bleed thru. I use bulls eye Clear Shellac spray as the sealer on the furniture before painting. No sanding needed.
