you will need to strip off the exsisting stain, use citristrip which a non-toxic remover, allow to dry and retain with exterior stain, once dry seal it with a exterior clear marine varnish
I’m a stain fan. When you’re done, and it’s perfectly dry, be sure to spray with a clear exterior sealer
Paint with any paint or stain - but seal it with a good polycrylic for paint and polyurethane for stain.
Take a steel brush (like used for cleaning grills) and brush any chipping paint/stain off. Decide if you want stain or painting. Rustoleum makes a wonderful like of paints with a stain look. After painting or staining, seal with a good clear sealer. I use Rustoleum Triple Glaze for all of my outside items and it works year after year. Just did a touch up after 3 years in the sun and rain. Hope that helps!
I think it's a personal preference. Either way, be sure to seal it well.
No matter what you do you will need to seal it so this doesn't happen again.
