Sand the pieces down to remove any existing finish. re-stain then seal the pieces with a few coats of a varnish or polycrylic, sanding lightly in between coats.

If this is a good set of antique table and chairs, please, do not paint them. Many old pieces with wood that is hard to get these days and craftsmanship you can't find like dovetail drawers are being ruined with paint. Do what Holly says in her answer.
Before doing ANYTHING, it is best to consider the possibility that cleaning and waxing would be the optimum choice. As I have learned, real antiques can lose their value if they are refinished.
