What should I do with the frame/cain on this chair?

These 2 chairs and the curtains are the only things that will stay when I redo my living room. The Lazy Boy chair is burgundy and grey the other chair seat cushion is burgundy suede , curtains are burgundy and grey. I'm tired of the distressed look in my home. I haven't picked the exact paint colour yet, but it will be in the grey family. So the big question is what should I do to the chair frame and the cane? I just upholstered the seat cushion and want it to keep it as is.
The chair with the cane is my problem.

Why don't you upholster it in the same fabric as the seat? I would think it would be moderately simple because you have the frame to work with. That's what I would do.

Thanks Rita I didn't think of that. Hummm! I would have to do both inside and outside, I don't think I have enough burgundy to do both. I made throw cushion's Silly silly me LOL . I do have some grey suede left from doing the dining room chairs. Maybe the inside burgundy and outside grey????

I would like add to Rita's suggestion. I would paint the frame and cane grey. Then upholster only the inside cane with the burgundy fabric.

Hi Jean I live the combo of burgundy and grey...clean and classic . I think the cane chair would look great painted a grey ( the back and the legs and frame). I would add a toss pillow in a print of grey, burgundy and cream. Something like an ikat print would be nice.

If by upholster you mean make another cushion for the back in the same fabric as the seat, then I agree wholeheartedly. I still like the rattan sides to show though as it adds character to the chair.

I agree with Steve - perhaps just a back cushion but leave the rattan as is. Most cane furnishings can be washed with a salt wash, which also tightens the cane. A simple polishing - once dry - with a furniture polish would give it a new lease on life.

@Jean Myles Pour the salt - about 1kg - in a bucket with a little hot water. Stir to dissolve. Fill the bucket to about half way with cold water, apply liberally to your caneware and scrub with a car wash brush. Remember to do both sides of the caneware and check the undersides too. Leave in a sunny place to dry completely. With polishing, if the wood has not been polished for a while it will, no doubt, suck up the first few applications. So I would suggest a daily polishing for one week (with a liquid polish) and then maintain a monthly schedule. Good luck. Would love to see it after. ps In NZ this style of rattan furniture is VERY expensive.

I agree that the rattan is part of the character of this chair. You could make an over-sized cushion in the shape of the back...one that sort of wraps around the inside back...make one cushion, but after leaving enough for the back, seam down the sides about 6" from each edge...giving it sort of wings. That would give it that look that bucket seats have in expensive foreign cars!

Is the cane openings big enough to weave - you can weave some grey and burgundy into and still have enough of the cane showing for accent - especially if some of your other furnishings are in the same type of wood.

Lighten it up! Go with a light grey wash. Cane is ez to paint. I'd paint that solid, & use a wash on the wood, where you see slightly darker brush strokes. It'll still fit in with your new look. Add a whimsical throw pillow.

Ok so I have a totally different perspective on your chair. I have 2 different ways because of the cane. If the cane is different pieces and not all one, I would take out the sides, only leaving the back. I would then paint the wood and the back cane in your grey color and get burgandy ribbon or use your leftover fabric, or as a previous comment said an ikat print, or a print with grey and burgundy mixed and weave that through the cane back. IF the cane is one whole piece, I would still remove the sides, weave your ribbon through but using a much longer ribbon at this point, brining it around the back side of the chair and either tying a bow or securing it with a pin or whatever. Then I would add a small grey and small burgandy throw pillow to it. Just my thoughts!

Thanks Mcgypsy9 The cane is 1 piece . I will have to think about your ideas .

To tighten the cane if you would like to keep it is simple. Use a salt wash. But if you want to make your furniture upgrade add a bit of your left over gray paint to it and dry brush in one direction only to make the cane look weathered. and for decorative use only a small throw or pillow.

On this site, I saw a similar chair, spray painted with fabric paint. It was still soft and turned out beautifully. I'm sure you could find it with a search.

I have a very similar chair. I gel stained the wood and cane to match other wood in my room and added a back cushion.

Your chair looks great. It looks just like mine no actually much better than mine.Is the back cushion attached or loose? There will not be any other wood in the room
  • Avia anderson Avia anderson on Apr 30, 2016
it's loose Jean...and very thin. It tucks behind the bottom cushion to keep it in place. Since you have no other wood in the room, you could paint it with milk paint any color you like!

This is such a lovely piece. I used chalk paint on my patio furniture which was also cane, I went for a beachwood effect myself. I would strongly advise that if you choose to paint the cane, use a spray paint and build up the colour gradually, cane is not the easiest surface to paint. Good luck
