Would like to re-finish the top of my dining room table- any advice?
Not sure if it's a veneer top and there are several gouges, deep scratches and white marks. However, I love the legs and the iron details on the apron and it's the perfect size for my area! What could I do--paint the top? stencil the top?

Hey Cheryl, yeppers you can definitely paint the top! I would fix all gauges etc with wood putty, sand it down and then prime and paint in any color you like. After that, because it is a "work" surface, you will definitely want to protect it. Three coats of poly acrylic will do the trick to help keep it safe!
If it has gouges and deep scratches, I would glue a new piece of veneer on top and then stain it. If you want it painted, fill them with a water-based wood filler like Famowood. Sand and then prime and paint.
Not sure I'm handy enough to re-veneer the top, but the filling in before sanding is a great suggestion; thank you so much! Cheryl
