I spotted this wonderful Singer sewing machine base at a yard sale. Looking at it sitting there rusting, I recalled the wonderful stories of my grandmother and how she mended and made clothing for my mother and her 12 siblings using one just like this. Her machine was lost long ago but I knew right away I had to buy this one and save it. It needed a new life and purpose and I knew just exactly what I was going to do to give it that. I would use the most amazing medium on the market today, Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain and Glaze (www.unicornspit.com). Not only can this be used on wood, but also on metal, plastic, glass, canvas and the list goes on. It is the most versatile product around and I absolutely love it.
Singer sewing machine base
I started by sanding the board which was just laying on top. It looked to be in pretty bad shape. However, after sanding it down, I realized that the wood had a beautiful grain in it.
Weathered board used as a top for the base
Next, I started the transformation, the really fun part. Using Unicorn SPiT Gel stain and glaze in my favorite colors, Dragons Belly and Blue Thunder (there are 14 colors available at this time), I mixed a very small amount of SPiT (probably less than half an ounce), with 50% water.
Sanded board
After mixing the SPiT, using a spray bottle with water, I sprayed the top of the wood. I then applied the SPiT with my fingers. Another wonderful part of Unicorn SPiT is that it is non-toxic and completely safe to use with bare hands. Also, it has a wonderful jasmine smell and can be used indoors.

I spread the SPiT, using my fingers and hands to horizontally wipe it across the board, doing one color at a time. I then took a lint-free cloth and wiped the stain into the wood until I achieved the look I wanted.
SPiT application before sealing
I let the SPiT dry for about 3 hours then applied a total of 4 coats of clear gloss Minwax Polyurethane, letting each coat dry and sanding with 220 grit paper in between each coat.

I sanded off the rust from the base of the machine and sprayed with Rust-Oleum Hammered Black enamel.
