Saving and Transforming Water Damaged Furniture

This 4-pc Bedroom Set hit a detour on the way to the shop for refinishing...a mud pit! What happened next was near disastrous! In an attempt to quickly remove the mud, my client sprayed the furniture with a water hose. I faced many challenges with this set and shared the progress on the blog.
I must admit, the challenge was a bit intimidating!
Top to bottom, side to side, the pieces were drenched in mud!
I removed the panels on the back of the furniture and all the drawers, allowing the wood to completely dry before proceeding.
After proper cleaning, the unsightly water damage still remained.
Discoloration and veneer damage...
The hardware got it's fair share of mud too!
My Scrubby Soap came in handy for this project!
Discolored but still salvageable! Daddy Van's restored the hardware to like new condition!
The accenting and finishing touches brought the pieces back to life.
Proving that even the dirtiest of things can shine again!

How did this stuff get so muddy? I would have tried to clean it with a cloth instead of a hose. Wood and copious amounts of water do not mix very well. This furniture looks like new with the paint job and cleaned handles. It's great that water damage can be fixed. http://www.sarasotadisasterrestoration.com/water-damage.html
  • Thanks for great ideas for transforming and saving water damage furniture. I liked your tips that are very helpful. I also have some tips for work, you can try it. The easiest restoration process is cleaning; what first appears to be a beat-up finish may just be dirt. Over a period of years, even furniture that is well cared for can acquire a dull, sticky coating of wax and dust. In many cases, this coating can be removed with an oil-based commercial wood cleaner/conditioner. These cleaners will cut through layers of dirt and wax. They are available at furniture stores, supermarkets, and paint stores. Thanks for nice tips.
