You can buy a thick felt especially for that purpose, you can then use a tablecloth of your choice
I had glass cut for my table.
I have a plastic sheet coated with felt on the underside and cut to shape on my dining table. My tablecloth goes on top of it and the table is nicely protected.
There are specific products for tabletops. The best are table pads. They are available with the same wood look of wood on one side, and a choice of colors for the felt part that touches the tabletop, there are numerious companies that make them for the shape of the table on line. On the least expensive side you can buy homasote 4 x8s at Lowes or Home Depot, and cut to the shape of you table. Then buy felt at a Micheals, or Joann Fabrics, and wrap it around the homasote that you have cut to finish the the pads.
AGREE WITH THE OTHER TWO IDEAS. EITHER ONE WILL WORK
If you want to see the wood, then spend the money and get the glass.
I have glass on my tables but my mom had custom made table pads for the dining room table and breakfast table.
The decorating magazines with ads on the back usually have ads for custom made table pads.
