Are you going lighter or darker or the same? If lighter, you'll need to go all the way down to the original wood. For darker or the same, remove the sealer with a solvent such as soy paint remover. You can also gel stain over the existing finish if the finish is in good condition and then seal the gel stain with at least two coats of a water based sealer. Whatever you choose, take the time to remove the doors and all the hardware. Good luck.
Hello. The first thing I did was remove the doors and drawers. Then I removed all of the hardware. These pieces I took outside and sanded down. Once sanded wipe them down to remove all of the sanding dust. Then you are ready to stain. I went darker so I applied a few coats of stain letting them completely dry in between coats. Once my color was achieved I applied a few coats of polyurethane, lightly sanding between coats to help the next coat adhere better and to remove any air bubbles. Then I did the same thing with the base in the bathroom. Last I added to new hardware and put the doors and drawer back on.

I am hooked on gel stain - it is wiped on and covers directly on top of existing stain. MinWax makes one and so does General Finishes.
