Can I paint over wallpaper or should I take it off first

  • If it is still tight on the wall, you can paint over it. Start with a good oil-based primer.

    If you don't take it off, the seams will show (or possibly curl away from the wall), and other imperfections will stand out. The problem is not knowing what the wall under the paper looks like. People frequently use wall paper to cover wall blemishes.

    I've done it both ways. If you're keeping the wallpaper and don't want the seams to show, strip the seams and spackle. If you're apprehensive about doing a good spackling job, remove the wallpaper and start anew.

    Take it off first. Yes, it is a lot of work but if you don't, you will regret it in years to come.

    Zinsser makes a product called Gardz. if you’re painting the paper, use a quality adhesive on any loose seams, then paint with above product, before using paint of your choice. We‘ve used this in a number of our rentals. Have had good outcome
