You can, but I wouldn't. As time goes by moisture and just age can start to peel the paper. It is much, much harder to remove wallpaper that has been painted.
Gently sand down the seams of the wallpaper so they're not too noticeable. Apply a coat of oil-based primer to the entire surface of the walls before painting. This helps seal the adhesive within the paper and away from the moisture in the paint.
It will be in your best interest to remove the wallpaper. As others say it is fine you are looking for future headaches.
You can do it, but will most likely regret it later. Often, wallpaper will start to bubble and peel from the moisture in your paint after it gets painted. Also, the seams are likely to loosen and stand up so they are much more noticeable.
It is never a good idea to paint over wallpaper. The moisture from the paint will lift it and you will end up with a real mess!
not a good idea...it will lift /bubble/tear...you need to remove it and sand down
Best to remove it. It will start to peel and then you have a double mess.
