Can I stain and seal plywood?

I have a 2 cheap tables that I deconstructed and put together to make 1 large dining room table. I've seen plywood with beautiful patterns that I would love to utilize as the table top, but I need to stain it to match my color scheme and I'd like to coat it with a protective and waterproof coating.
What do I use to accomplish this?

Staining plywood will make it look spotty and splotchy. Lighter grains will absorb more stain than heavier grains. Use a wood conditioner on the plywood first. Its a clear liquid that will absorb more into lighter grains and less in heavier grains. Let it soak in for at least half an hour. Wipe off the excess. Let it dry completely. Then apply your stain and seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane lightly sanding with a green Scotch Bright pad in between coats except the last one. Use a foam brush to apply the stain and poly. No brush marks.
