Yes you can paint veneered wood that is in good shape. Chalk paint is a good option for this project. If you think that the wood color/stain may bleed into the whit paint you can buy a clear spray sealer--Rustoleum makes a clear sealer--matte finish--and give it a light coat before you chalk paint. This will help with any bleeding
