Handan & Greg @ The Navage Patch on May 02, 2016Hello Norma, You can leave your chalk paint painted pots as they are (without wax) but because chalk paint is porous in time rain and other outdoor conditions will start wearing the paint off. If you are going for a patina look then not applying anything is the way to go. But if you want to protect the look depending on where you will keep them you can use wax or polyurethane. For indoors wax is good enough protection for your chalk paint painted pots. For outdoors though an outdoor type polyurethane is recommended by most chalk paint retailers instead of wax. I use either of the following polys with all my pots depending on how matte I want them to look. If you want to check them out and read the reviews below are the links for those polys: For satin finishes I use: http://amzn.to/1SFMOg4 For flat/matte finishes I use: http://amzn.to/1rcwIQpHelpful Reply

Dri5427667 on May 02, 2016Go on Annie Sloan website. With her chalk paint you Do Not wax the piece that goes outside. Only have to take a wet rag and wipe the piece down before putting outside. I painted planters , rain barrel and pole light with chalk paint. It has been a year and still looks like new.Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on May 02, 2016To further add to my comment there were a lot of posts on this very same question. All the answers were to seal the finished product to prevent damage from being used outside. That goes for all painted surfaces not just chalk paint . It is basically the right procedure experienced or not.Helpful Reply
