  • It shouldn't be necessary to sand before painting with chalk paint. Clean the piece of furniture well, let it dry, and then paint. If you want a distressed look, you can sand your edges.

    It is not necessary but it is not a bad idea to do a very light sanding.

    I don't sand before chalk painting, but just make sure it is clean and dry before starting. You can sand after the paint around the edges to give it a vintage/worn look.

  • It depends on what you're painting. If you're doing something like kitchen cabinets (which I don't love chalk paint for) or a dining table, I would do ALL the prep to make your paint job last.

    As a person who sells the furniture I paint, I don't skimp on prep. So I also prime the tops of pieces that will get a lot of use (like dresser tops).

    Most people can get away without sanding though.


    But don't skimp on cleaning the piece thoroughly.
