What color options do I have to paint front door?

I am not liking the front entry way, it's blah. I want to paint, but I need help as to what color. I don't like the screen door, but need it for air in 3 seasons (only have 1 window and the screen door that open). I'd like to have a full screen /glass, but I have a large dog that likes to get out, and need an inexpensive fix. The bushes will be gone soon.
Maybe I could paint the brick also????
The pictures seem to make the siding look gray, but it leans more to the green side, in my opinion. The shutters are black.

  • what's your favorite color? Vibrant red, deep burnt orange, blood red. That would really catch your eye. As for the screen door, I would think about taking it off and painting it the same color as the door. I always wondered why people do not do that since the screen door is what is seen. Then I would put some color on your porch with a big colored pot of flowers! Maybe even paint the bistro set a vibrant color too. Your decorations are so cute! have fun!

@Tracee BM Wythe Blue would look gorgeous with the color of your siding, check it out here for inspo! http://frecklefaceathome.blogspot.com/2012/04/shut-front-door.html

I would consider your siding color, gray, a neutral so your color choices for the doors are basically endless. However, since the gray siding is a darker shade, I think a light or bright color on the doors would pop more, rather than something dark or muted. I would definitely paint the screen door and the interior door the same color and repeating the color with flowers, or painting the chairs or a big flower pot would also add needed color and visual interest.

Thank you for your input, ladies! With winter around the corner, this project will have to wait. I'll have a while before I have to make my decision. It's good not to rush into a project like this. Thanks again!

Considering your siding color, would go with a red as suggested by The Garden Frog Boutique. Good luck. Post pictures when you are done with it.

With the black shutters, red would be the classic pick...gray/black/red is a great combo. And yes, paint the screen door too!
  • Cheryl Robinson-Atwood Cheryl Robinson-Atwood on Sep 27, 2014
Red-but choose the shade carefully. Red is one of the hardest colors to get right.

Since your house is a neutral, bright yellow, (not fluorescent), red, royal blue, lime green. Your choices are endless. Even a brighter, more pure white in a semi gloss.
  • Hope Williams Hope Williams on Sep 27, 2014
Don't forget to paint the storm door too!
  • Lisa Ludlow Lisa Ludlow on Sep 27, 2014
What are the colors in your home? If the door is open will it flow with the rest of your house. We have a similar color scheme to our house. We went with a deep cranberry and a screen door to match. Inside our home our walls are a deep golden yellow with cranberry accents. Now having said all that it is time for me to paint that stinkin' door again. :) I'm just waiting on cooler weather.
    • Tracee Tracee on Sep 28, 2014
@Lisa Ludlow I have several "irons in the fire" right now. Just bought paint from home depot, Behr malted milk (it's a light beige) for my living room. After that is finished, then to work on the window treatments. I also have to remove wallpaper from two bathrooms, close off a doorway, paint and decorate them.

I love watching the curb appeal TV shows. They always tell you to make your front door stand out to be inviting. With your color schemes they often use red on the door. I think that would still show off nice behind your screen door & give you color to play off of for all the seasons.

I could certainty see a beautiful burgundy red on both of the doors. If not, then an emerald green. Embrace color!
  • Betty Betty on Sep 27, 2014
Since the gray siding Is neutral, I would get several samples of gold to orange and figure out which ones look good with the brick. Of course, red is safe.
  • Nancy Nancy on Sep 27, 2014
I like the idea of a deep red for both doors. Then I would consider painting the shudders the same color.
  • Van Randall Van Randall on Sep 27, 2014
I too agree a dark red or burgundy.
  • Susan McKnight-Balus Susan McKnight-Balus on Sep 27, 2014
I like the RED idea. That will give it a big nice pop of color and red is very welcoming in a door!
  • Sue Sue on Sep 27, 2014
I agree with Lisa. What colors are inside your house?
  • Donna Donna on Sep 27, 2014
Any color in the rainbow would go with the siding all most but will not look good with a white storm door so paint it too.....even the shutters could be the same color...Donna Richmond, MI.

    burnt orange
  • Debra Hicks Debra Hicks on Sep 27, 2014
I actually used burnt orange on my back door and garage. I was having salmon for my front room and I am so unsure of what color I should even paint mine. So since my back patio door is painted red it looks really rich and my awning in the front is red I went with it look at all your surroundings first.

I have just discovered a luscious deep burgundy (ish) color called aubergine. It would look perfect with your house color. The color of my home is a pale green and I'm going to paint my front door aubergine as soon as it cools down a bit. (I live in Arizona)

Don't make a big deal out of it, it's ONLY paint. You can repainted it. Pick any color, start with red that's a bold color that will get everyones attention. Have fun!
  • Bibi Sweet67 Bibi Sweet67 on Sep 27, 2014
Burgundy would be nice especially next to the gray siding.
  • Lori Lori on Sep 27, 2014
Burgandy would also be my choice, but Anita is right, it'sonly paint and in this case it's only a qt. Sometimes, I hang things up, like a sheet or something in a color you are thinking about, over the door, and it will give you an idea.
  • Barb Barb on Sep 27, 2014

I painted ours a deep plum-burgundy.... We bought a burgundy storm door, almost like yours (LOVE IT)..... took a sample piece of it to the paint store,,,,color matched the front door paint .. YOur hardware is silver, the grey-burgundy with silver in the window and hardware would be would be a great combo. If you are thinking of changing the storm door too.. would also compliment the beige brick.. Our house is a bit darker brick, tan window frames and burgundy door..the idea is to DRAW YOUR EYE to the , as to say "this is where you come in.. or this way.."

  • Dave kilzer Dave kilzer on Sep 28, 2014
In my opinion A nice bright turquoise would really cause the gray to pop . I would do both the front door and the storm door . In the bottom square I 'd paint gray with WELCOME stenciled in white paint.

I'd go with something Bright and Loud! Being your home is mostly gray/white/black, you could paint your door Hot pink if you wanted and it'd look great. Now pink isn't my first choice but you want to make it say, Hi! Come on in and have a cup of coffee with me :) Don't go dark, go LOUD!! You should go look on Pinterest, I'm sure you'd find one you'd love!

I have sage siding.........white shutters........and a (sort of) sage door.......wanting to change my door color also.......I use alot of pink toned flowers in the summer, I like them against the sage green, so I was thinking I might paint my door in a deep rose color......deep red with your green/gray with black shutters would look great!
  • Jackie D Jackie D on Oct 01, 2014
I'm for the Red, a nice gloss red ! Nothing says happy like a red door! Leave the white trim and paint the brick white not red. You want the door to give the wow factor.
  • Stacy Stacy on Oct 02, 2014
I think a darker green would blend nicely!
  • Stacy Stacy on Oct 02, 2014
Red is always used to bring good omens to your home! A deep red (blue tint) is very attractive on homes.
  • Cath windmueller Cath windmueller on Oct 02, 2014
I agree with @Jackie D regarding painting the brick white. I had a home with the same color brick and it got painted white. It really freshened the whole look and made everything cohesive.
  • if you paint the brick the same as the wall above it, the wall will look taller, but textured====I painted my front and back doors my favorite color, and I love it===paint both door &storm the same...don't worry it's only paint...
  • Janice Janice on Jan 29, 2015
definitely, RED. make the grey siding and white trims just pop!! the bold, happy color is cheerful and welcoming. i love red accent for certain colors. it compliments; grey, black, white. hope you like!!
  • Betty Miller Betty Miller on Aug 17, 2015
Since the walls are grey/green I would not paint red unless you went dark wine color you don't want a Christmas tree look. Can't tell if the brick is just on the porch? I would go white with it since the rest of house trim is white unless you are going to change the trim.
  • Marlene Haigh Marlene Haigh on Aug 17, 2015
I would paint the brick green if you don't like the yellow. Then paint the front door a bright yellow.
  • Jeannette Jeannette on Sep 07, 2015
Black, for sure! I'd also paint the screen door black.
  • Nancy Jenkins Nancy Jenkins on Sep 08, 2015
I was turned away from some colours because they mean something about the house. I made my own colour up. Hasn't sold the house yet. Any suggestions on colour to do front and side doors to bring buyers. Older home 1942 it was built.
