Hi Sue, here's info on making paint more transparent. Paint is inherently opaque, two coats will make it more so. Depending on what you are painting to make a translucent color, you could actually use coloring (food coloring or watercolor paints) mixed with school glue. I've done this to make a stained glass look on window panes.

Paint is basically opaque. To make it translucent or transparent add a glaze or medium like Floetrol.

Many decorative painting techniques call for thinned-down paint. Merely thinning paint with water results in a runny, uneven finish. Mixing paint with faux glazing medium or paint additives allows you to use the paint to give it a translucent, transparent look that doesn't drip or run.
Here is a comprehensive guide for that https://www.hunker.com/13411611/how-to-make-transparent-paint.

Hello. Fot acrylic paints using proprietary paint mediums can thin and make nice translucent shades. Sometimes Flotrol is helpful too.
You can thin latex paint with water. It would be a trial & error to get it to the point you desire.
What do you plan to use the paint on? It depends on the type of paint but they're basically opaque, unless you're looking at glass paint. Water will thin water based paints, mineral spirits thins oil, or you can purchase glaze mediums.
Hi Sue, this video will show you how to make translucent water-based craft paint - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOdQWxHW_pw. For opaque paint, mix your craft paint with a little white.
Clear acrylic paint
You can mix the paint with water, like what you do when you create a white wash. This post details how I made a white wash paint: https://momhomeguide.com/white-washed-patio-pots/
