That sounds great! Yes you can whitewash the bricks, just water down your white paint to the consistency you want and go at it! If you want to hang a mantle, make sure you use heavy duty cement screws.

If you are hanging a heavy mantel like this, you predrill holes using a large mason bit, then epoxy glue in 2-4 pieces of rebar/metal rods and let set. Then drill corresponding holes in the wooden mantel, measure twice.

White wash is the quickest, easiest and least expensive in IMO. I conquered our huge fireplace wall a few years ago.
