Hello, Practice on a piece of card or board before attempting to work on the wall. Paint base colour, when dry, sponge over with a mid grey colour. If too dark add white if too light add more grey or a touch of black.
It will depend on the technique you want to produce. Specialty rollers and brushes can be used to create some of them. Others, like dry brushing, are done with a regular brush and lots of practice to get the finish you desire.

Sometimes you can find patterned paint rollers that can make the job much easier. Or a peel and stick wallpaper that mimics the efffect.
