How do I protect a barn quilt after painting it?

I’m making a barn quilt and wondering what is the best clear coat to put on it after. I am using 1 2 3 primer first , then exterior paint. I thought to give it extra protection I bought exterior minwax clear spray but not sure if that will protect it against our brutal winters.

You are on the right track! Using exterior paint--especially if it is house paint--will be long wearing for your barn quilt. I used exterior house paint on my outside wood DIY side farm tables with no poly and that paint finish has not had to be repainted yet-6 years. The sun and accompanying heat is going to be your biggest enemy. If you can hang your barn quilt in a more protected area it will last longer. If you hang in out in the elements--like on the front of a barn--it will weather over time. I want to make one of these myself! Would love to see a picture!

I used Minwax exterior spar urethane on a protected chair but it did not hold up to sunshine! I'm not sure if a quality exterior paint may be the best and not add a top coat at all. Water base poly is less durable but stays clear, oil based products will yellow. I do love a barn quilt and have that on my "craft list". Please post your finished project, would love to see!
