How do I remove wallpaper glue without damaging drywall?

The wallpaper was so old it just peeled off by hand. Now I have yellow splotches of glue. I'd like to paint the wall, so I would like to keep it as smooth as possible. Any easy way to remove the glue? (besides a wallpaper steamer, I tried that & it was a mess)

I use vinegar and hot water to remove wallpaper and to wash down the residual glue off the walls.

TSP is a product commonly used to wash down the walls that have been papered and is very effective. The residue you are dealing with is a glue or adhesive. If the wall paper is really old, it was likely a home made flour and water, made into a paste. TSP would be more expensive than the vinegar and hot water suggested by William and I personally would try his method first and the TSP as a back up plan.

If the wallpaper was glued to unpainted sheetrock you cant get it off without ripping sheetrock paper. All wou can do after you're done is skim spackle and sand the wall.

For sure at any big box hardware such as Lowes or HomeDepot. Some grocery stores will carry it where it is usually found in the laundry area. I comes in liquid and powder. For a big job like this, I recommend the powder.
